My sweet aunt, Maura, was in town visiting for a few weeks and surprised Elyse and Bryn with a butterfly kit. Maura was a teacher for many years and used to do this activity with her class each year. I'm so thankful for this gift. It was an incredible and fun learning experience for the girls and for us!
Our five fuzzy caterpillars arrived in the mail. The brown stuff at the bottom of the cup is their food.
The caterpillars crawled around in the cup, eating and sleeping for several days before attaching to the lid and hanging upside-down in a J shape. Once they were attached to the top, it was only a couple of hours before they shed their exoskeletons one last time and formed a chrysalis. They stayed in the chrysalis for 5-10 days.
The birth of our butterflies.
We kept our pretty butterflies inside for three days. The girls loved getting to feed them watermelon and watching them eat, play and fly around.
Setting them free.
Bye Bye Butterflies!
